Lion Dance Traditions
Lion dance in Singapore encompasses two primary styles: Southern lion dance (Nan Shi) and Northern lion dance (Bei Shi). Southern lion dance, more commonly seen in Singapore, features a colourful lion with expressive movements, it is playful, curious and spirited, performing the traditional cai qing (plucking the greens) ritual where the lion approaches a head of lettuce and red envelope, symbolising the gathering of wealth and good fortune. Northern lion dance features a more realistic lion appearance with shaggy fur, performing acrobatic feats in pairs. Our troupes are proficient in both styles and advise clients on which is most appropriate for their occasion.
Acrobatic Lion Dance (Mei Hua Zhuang)
For maximum impact and spectacle, our acrobatic lion dance troupe performs on mei hua zhuang, elevated poles of varying heights arranged in specific formations. The lion leaps between poles, performs balancing acts, bows and executes dramatic jumps that showcase extraordinary skill, coordination and bravery. Acrobatic lion dance is the pinnacle of lion dance performance and is reserved for the most prestigious events, grand openings and cultural celebrations. This breathtaking display draws massive crowds and creates unforgettable moments that define any event.
Chinese New Year Celebrations
Lion dance is the centrepiece of Chinese New Year celebrations across Singapore, and our troupes are in high demand during the festive season. We perform at corporate CNY lunches and dinners, shopping centre festivities, community celebrations, hotel events, restaurant openings and private celebrations. CNY lion dance packages include traditional drum and cymbal accompaniment, the cai qing ceremony, auspicious greetings and red envelope distribution. Early booking is essential for Chinese New Year as our calendar fills months in advance.
Grand Openings and Business Events
Lion dance is a traditional and auspicious way to mark grand openings, business launches, office inaugurations and milestone celebrations. The lion blesses the new premises, performs the cai qing ceremony and symbolically invites prosperity and success into the business. We perform at restaurant openings, retail store launches, office inaugurations, factory blessings and property launches across Singapore. Packages can include a single lion, a pair of lions (symbolising double prosperity) or multiple lions for large-scale events.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cai qing ceremony?
Cai qing (plucking the greens) is the traditional lion dance ritual where the lion approaches a head of lettuce tied with a red envelope. The lion inspects, plays with and eventually 'eats' the lettuce, spitting it out to symbolise spreading wealth and good fortune.
How far in advance should I book lion dance for CNY?
We recommend booking at least two to three months before Chinese New Year. Our calendar fills up quickly during the festive season, and early booking ensures you secure your preferred date and time.
Can lion dance be performed indoors?
Yes, our troupes regularly perform indoors at hotels, restaurants, offices and event venues. For indoor performances, we adjust the drum volume and ensure the performance fits the available space safely.
What is the difference between lion dance and dragon dance?
Lion dance features one or two performers inside a single lion costume performing the cai qing ceremony. Dragon dance involves eight to twelve performers controlling a long dragon puppet on poles, creating spectacular flowing movements. Both are auspicious but serve different ceremonial purposes.
